Matt Salmon On Government Shutdown: GOP Rep Says 'It's About Time' We Have Another One (VIDEO) Jan 6th 2013, 22:46 As Congress readies for another debt ceiling debate, one Republican is convinced that a government shutdown is the solution. Rep. Matt Salmon (R-Ariz.) appeared on CBS' "Face The Nation" on Sunday, voicing firm support for a suspension of government services. He cited 1995's federal stoppage, pegging that event as the "impetus" for "some real serious compromise." "I think it drove Bill Clinton in a different direction, a very bipartisan direction," Salmon said. "In fact, we passed welfare reform for the first time ever, and we cut the welfare ranks in the last decade and a half by over 50 percent. These are good things. We also balanced the budget for the first time in 40 years in 1997, 1998, 1999. And when I left, we had over a $230 billion surplus." Read More... More on Debt Ceiling
