2012 was a wild rollercoaster ride for the world of morning shows.
First, there was "Good Morning America" closing in on "Today," and threatening to knock its NBC News rival off its pedestal — which it finally did in April. The "GMA" win was historic: it marked the first time that the ABC morning show beat "Today" in sixteen years of weekly ratings.
Then, there was Ann Curry's ousting from co-host of "Today" — a role that she had aspired to for fifteen years. The explosive story broke late June, and she was gone a little over a week later. Curry said a tearful goodbye to her supporters on-air. Her departure left such a bad taste in viewers' mouths that some people have blamed it as the reason that they no longer watch "Today." It also resulted in terrible press for co-host Matt Lauer and other troubles for the show.
