World AIDS Day: 10 New Things We've Learned About HIV/AIDS This Year Dec 1st 2012, 06:02 Today marks World AIDS Day, a time for the global community to recognize the widespread impact of HIV/AIDS. Right now, 1.2 million people in the U.S. and 33.4 million people around the world live with HIV/AIDS, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. AIDS, or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, is caused by HIV, or the human immunodeficiency virus, and is considered the last step of the infection.
