The New York Times reports that President Obama will cut short his Christmas vacation in Hawaii to return to Washington in hopes of securing a deal on the fiscal cliff. The president, who spent the holiday with his family, may arrive in the capital as early as Wednesday.
On Friday, before leaving for Hawaii, Obama expressed optimism that a deal could still be struck. But expectations for a large-scale deal have faded considerably over the past week. Democrats and Republicans remain far apart on tax and spending issues, and House speaker John Boehner demonstrated tenuous control of his own party when a vote for his "Plan B" measure was unceremoniously shelved. Many believe that a small-scale temporary fix is now the most realistic solution.
